What is a Secure Data Environment?

In a nutshell

Researchers need data about people who have a disease, condition or who have experience of NHS care to develop new treatments, new medical technology or to improve the quality of care you receive.

The NHS is moving from sharing data with individual researchers on a project-by-project basis, to providing safe and secure access to data.

To do this, the NHS is creating a network of specially-designed online platforms where approved researchers can work with local, regional and national data. These are called Secure Data Environments.

The Network is made up of 11 regional Secure Data Environments which are being set up across England.
