Improving health through research

Powering research through data

Secure Data Environments are being set up to securely store, analyze and protect NHS data so that it can be effectively used in research which improves patient care and develops new innovations to keep us healthier.

The Secure Data Environment Network

The East Midlands is one of 11 regional Secure Data Environments which together make up a national Network across England.  It helps approved researchers by simplifying and accelerating secure access to NHS data.

By enabling world class research, the SDE Network is transforming how data is used to drive innovation and improve patient care. The SDE Network supports innovative research of all types, with a  focus on:

  • Algorithm training and development
  • Clinical trial activities (feasibility, recruitment and follow-up)
  • Real world studies
  • Translational research
  • Epidemiological studies
  • Health systems research

Who is involved in Secure Data Environments

Each SDE brings together the expertise of local front-line NHS staff, data scientists, technology providers, researchers and, through our communities, patients and the public.

NHS England

There is also a Secure Data Environment for England managed by NHS England.
