Feedback

NHS England is inviting you to complete a short survey about the NHS England Secure Data Environment (SDE) and the Data Uses Register. Your answers will help make sure we manage and explain the use of healthcare data by researchers in the best way possible.

What is the England SDE?

Every time you see a doctor or nurse – at your GP surgery, hospital, or other NHS service – some information about your visit is written down. This helps make sure you get the right care and that everyone looking after you has the correct details.

Sometimes, researchers would like some of this information to help them find better ways to treat illnesses and improve NHS services. Before they see it, we remove anything that could identify you, so nobody can tell who you are. The data is then stored in a special, secure computer system called the SDE. Only approved researchers with permission can use this system to study health trends and look for ways to improve patient care.

Why is your information safe?

  • De-identified: Anything that could identify you is taken out
  • Secure system: Access is tightly controlled so only authorised people can use it
  • Focused on health improvements: The data is used for projects that aim to improve healthcare for everyone
  • It’s your choice: You can learn more about managing your consent for data to be used for research at the NHS England web pages

What is the Data Uses Register?

NHS England keeps a public record called the Data Uses Register. It shows all the approved research projects, who is involved, and what they hope to learn. This way, everyone can see exactly why data is being used. Your ideas can help to make the Data Uses Register easier to use. NHS England would like your thoughts on how they can make it clearer and more helpful for patients, researchers, and the public.

Why your feedback matters?

By sharing your views in a short survey, you’ll help:

  • Make the SDE and Data Uses Register easier to understand
  • Show how the NHS uses data safely and carefully
  • Improve communication so everyone knows how and why data is used
